The EGR valve, or exhaust gas recirculation valve, helps your car to run more efficiently by burning off all the fuel in your car. It achieves this by re-circulating a portion of your fuel fumes from the exhaust system back up into the intake and chambers of your engine.
The problem with the EGR valve is that while it is designed to improve efficiency and it’s a proven way for manufacturers to reduce emissions, the jury is still out on whether or not it’s beneficial for the health of the engine. This is because it re-circulates dirty air into the engine, and therefore restricts the level of clean, cool airflow that your engine desperately craves.
EGR removal is becoming an increasingly popular vehicle modification because of this.
Issues with EGR valves
A quick search on Google will reveal all you need to know about EGR issues as well as the huge number of drivers who are having problems with this valve. Common issues include:
The benefits of removal
If your car is experiencing poor idling revs, is lethargic and unresponsive or there are high levels of smoke coming from the exhaust, a faulty EGR valve could be the problem. A faulty EGR valve can usually be diagnosed by plugging in an OBD diagnostic tool to diagnose trouble codes.
If a faulty EGR valve is diagnosed, complete EGR removal or deleting should fix the symptoms listed above. Of course, removing or deleting the EGR valve prior to these issues is also an option and highly recommended by Hyperchips on older, high-mileage vehicles.
Remove or delete?
Physical removal of the EGR valve can be achieved on cars such as the Discovery 2, but it’s not considered to be the best solution. EGR deleting is the most highly recommended solution. This is achieved by reprogramming the ECU to not use the EGR valve. This will result in cooler engine temperatures straight away, as well as improved throttle response and better fuel economy.
Is all of this legal?
It is 100% legal to remove the EGR system from your vehicle and the EGR system is not a part of the MOT test. This may be tightened up in the future but for now EGR removal is safe and legal.
